Who We Are

Carolina Youth Coalition is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that nurtures and propels high-achieving, under-resourced students to and through college. CYC was founded in February 2018 through a generous donation from the Albemarle Foundation. Learn more.

What Drives Us

Despite demonstrating the academic potential and drive to succeed at four-year universities, low-income students attend and persist through college at astoundingly low rates. These outcomes represent a profound resource gap - one which we address through offering our Fellows academic, social, leadership and college support services that are comparable to the services available to their most resourced peers. If empowered with the right tools and a strong support network, we believe these high-potential students can spark lasting generational change and return to their communities as leaders, innovators, and advocates for others.

Why It Matters

A college education is critical to one’s long-term financial security, yet many students and families face significant social, academic, and financial barriers to college success. Four-year degrees are also associated with healthier lifestyles, increased volunteerism, and deeper civic engagement.
When children born into the lowest income distribution get a college degree:
4X - Their chances of making it to the top income distribution nearly quadruple.
+50% - Their chances of making it out of the bottom increase by more than 50 percent.
